CT Primary: is an asterisk electioneering?

The first thing I noticed this morning when I went to vote in the CT Democratic primary was the asterisk. The candidates for governor were listed as:

Dan Malloy*
Ned Lamont

In fact, the four candidates across the top row all had asterisks after their names, while the bottom row candidates did not. Is there some fine print about these candidates I need to know?  Why are the names on the top row highlighted as such?

I asked the representative behind the table and was informed that the asterisk indicated that these candidates were endorsed by the CT Democratic Party.

This got me thinking... is an asterisk electioneering?

According to CT election law, there needs to be a 75-foot area free from all electioneering.  But here was this big PICK THESE GUYS indicator right on the ballot.  That seems like it could definitely sway some voters – and certainly violates the spirit (if not the letter) of election law.  What do you think.

Is an asterisk electioneering?
